Prothrombin Time (PT) test measures the time taken for blood plasma to clot after the addition of tissue factor and calcium, using citrated plasma as the sample. It evaluates the extrinsic and common pathways of the coagulation system.

This test is commonly recommended to assess bleeding or clotting disorders, monitor oral anticoagulant therapy (such as warfarin), and evaluate liver function and vitamin K status. A prolonged PT may indicate clotting factor deficiencies, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, or the effect of anticoagulant medications. PT results are often reported along with INR (International Normalized Ratio) for standardized interpretation and are correlated with clinical findings and other coagulation tests.
