Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates the thyroid gland’s production of T3 (Triiodothyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine). Measuring TSH in the blood helps assess thyroid function.
High TSH: Often indicates hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), where the thyroid produces less T3/T4.
Low TSH: Often indicates hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), where the thyroid produces excess T3/T4.
TSH is a key marker in Thyroid Function Tests (TFT) and is commonly measured along with Total/Free T3 and Total/Free T4 to evaluate thyroid health.
