Total T3 measures the total amount of triiodothyronine (T3) hormone in the blood, including both the bound and free forms. T3 is a thyroid hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and energy production.
High Total T3: May indicate hyperthyroidism or excessive thyroid hormone production.
Low Total T3: May indicate hypothyroidism, chronic illness, or pituitary/thyroid dysfunction.
Total T3 is usually measured as part of a Thyroid Function Test (TFT) along with TSH, Total T4, and sometimes Free T3/Free T4 to evaluate thyroid health.
