The Malarial Parasite (MP) Smear is a microscopic examination of peripheral blood used for the detection and identification of Plasmodium species causing malaria. The test involves preparation of thick and thin blood smears on a glass slide, which are stained (commonly with Giemsa stain) and examined under a microscope. The thick smear is used for detecting the presence of parasites due to higher sensitivity, while the thin smear helps in identifying the specific species such as Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium malariae, or Plasmodium ovale, and in assessing parasite density. The presence of malarial parasites in red blood cells confirms the diagnosis of malaria, and results should be interpreted in correlation with clinical symptoms and other laboratory findings.
