Apolipoprotein A1 (Apo A1), Serum is the major protein component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and plays a key role in reverse cholesterol transport by facilitating the removal of cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver for excretion. The serum Apo A1 test measures the concentration of apolipoprotein A1 in blood and is commonly performed using immunoassay methods. It is used in the assessment of lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk, as Apo A1 levels correlate inversely with the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Reduced Apo A1 levels may be associated with increased cardiovascular risk, metabolic disorders, liver disease, and genetic lipid abnormalities, while increased levels are generally considered protective. Measurement of Apo A1 is often interpreted alongside other lipid parameters, including apolipoprotein B, to provide a more accurate evaluation of cardiovascular risk than traditional lipid profile alone.
