Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA), Serum is a tumor-associated glycoprotein commonly used as a cancer marker, particularly in colorectal malignancies. The CEA test measures the level of this antigen in blood and is typically performed using immunoassay methods such as chemiluminescence. It is mainly used for monitoring treatment response, assessing disease progression, and detecting recurrence in patients with known cancers, especially colorectal cancer, and may also be elevated in cancers of the lung, breast, pancreas, and stomach. CEA is not recommended as a screening test for the general population due to limited specificity, as elevated levels can also be seen in certain benign conditions such as smoking, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, and pancreatitis. Serial measurement of CEA is valuable for follow-up of cancer patients when interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and imaging studies.
