CA 19-9, Serum test measures the level of Cancer Antigen 19-9, a tumor-associated marker present in the blood. It is primarily used as a tumor marker for pancreatic and certain gastrointestinal cancers.
This test is commonly recommended for monitoring disease progression, evaluating response to treatment, and detecting recurrence in patients with known malignancies, especially pancreatic, biliary tract, and gastrointestinal cancers. Elevated CA 19-9 levels may also be seen in some benign conditions such as pancreatitis, liver disease, or bile duct obstruction; therefore, it is not used alone for cancer diagnosis. Results are interpreted along with clinical findings, imaging studies, and other laboratory investigations for accurate assessment.
