Creatine Phosphokinase-MB (CPK-MB or CK-MB) test measures the level of the MB isoenzyme of creatine kinase in the blood, which is found predominantly in the heart muscle. It is released into the bloodstream when there is damage or injury to cardiac muscle cells.
This test is commonly recommended in the evaluation of suspected myocardial infarction (heart attack), chest pain, and other cardiac conditions, and may also be used to monitor ongoing cardiac injury or recovery. Elevated CK-MB levels suggest recent heart muscle damage, although mild increases can sometimes be seen in severe skeletal muscle injury. Results are interpreted along with Troponin levels, ECG findings, and clinical symptoms for accurate cardiac assessment and management.
