Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (Anti-TPO) test measures the presence of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase enzyme in the blood, an enzyme essential for the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). The presence of Anti-TPO antibodies indicates an autoimmune response against the thyroid gland.
This test is commonly recommended in the evaluation of thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, hypothyroidism, and other autoimmune thyroid conditions. Elevated Anti-TPO levels may suggest thyroid inflammation or autoimmune thyroid disease and are often interpreted along with TSH, T3, and T4 levels and clinical findings for accurate diagnosis and management.
