RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) test is a non-treponemal screening test used to detect antibodies produced in response to Treponema pallidum infection (Syphilis) in the blood. It does not directly detect the bacteria but identifies reagin antibodies that indicate possible active or past infection.
This test is commonly recommended for routine health screening, antenatal check-ups, blood donor screening, pre-operative evaluation, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) assessment. A reactive result suggests possible Syphilis infection and usually requires confirmatory treponemal tests (such as TPHA/FTA-ABS) for definitive diagnosis, while a non-reactive result generally indicates no detectable antibodies at the time of testing. Results should always be interpreted with clinical findings and patient history.
