The Serum Prolactin test is a laboratory blood test used to measure the level of prolactin hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. Prolactin is mainly responsible for milk production after childbirth and also plays an important role in regulating reproductive functions and hormonal balance in both males and females. This test is commonly recommended in conditions such as menstrual irregularities, infertility, abnormal breast milk secretion, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and suspected pituitary gland disorders. Increased prolactin levels can be associated with pregnancy, stress, thyroid disorders, kidney disease, or the use of certain medications, while decreased levels are uncommon and may indicate pituitary dysfunction. Proper sample collection and minimizing stress or heavy physical activity before testing are advised, as these factors can influence hormone levels.
