Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Serum is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and plays a crucial role in the regulation of the reproductive system in both males and females. In females, LH triggers ovulation and stimulates the formation of the corpus luteum, leading to progesterone secretion and normal regulation of the menstrual cycle. In males, LH acts on the Leydig cells of the testes to stimulate testosterone production, which is essential for spermatogenesis and development of secondary sexual characteristics. The serum LH test measures the concentration of luteinizing hormone in blood and is commonly performed using immunoassay methods such as chemiluminescence. This test is widely used in the evaluation of infertility, menstrual disorders, ovulatory dysfunction, pubertal disorders, and disorders of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, and is often interpreted along with FSH and other reproductive hormones.
