Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Serum is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and plays a key role in regulating reproductive function in both males and females. In females, FSH stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles and is essential for estrogen production and normal menstrual cycle regulation. In males, it acts on the Sertoli cells of the testes to support spermatogenesis. The serum FSH test measures the concentration of FSH in blood and is commonly performed using immunoassay techniques such as chemiluminescence. This test is used in the evaluation of infertility, menstrual irregularities, delayed or precocious puberty, and disorders of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis. It is also helpful in assessing ovarian reserve in females and testicular function in males.
